Reception Focuses on Research, Scholarly, and Creative Accomplishments

Provost Peter Stearns will host a reception Thursday, April 25, to honor the research, scholarly, and creative activities of the university community. "The reception is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate the extraordinary imagination and productivity of the faculty, students, and staff of George Mason University," says Stearns.

The progress of this institution with regard to research is well known, adds Stearns, who cites a doubling of research awards in the past five years; new Ph.D. programs in biosciences and bioinformatics; U.S. News and World Report's high ranking of Mason's programs in law, creative writing, history, nursing, and public administration; and the program to involve undergraduates in research projects with our faculty.

Stearns created the by-invitation-only event to acknowledge the work of the individuals responsible for the university's prominence. The reception's printed program is a yearbook highlighting the significant achievements for the 2001 calendar year. Those achievements document the university's commitment to collaboration, interdisciplinary work, and global engagement.

"The choices are idiosyncratic. Scholarly significance varies widely from discipline to discipline, and I have happily deferred to the nominating departments to make that assessment," Stearns says. The list is of necessity only a snapshot, but it does show the wide range of activities to which Mason's faculty, students, and staff contribute, he says. "Most important, these accomplishments reveal the impact that George Mason University has on the many communities of which we are a part."
